The River Wild (1994), an American thriller directed by Curtis Hanson and written by Denis O’Neill, tells the story of a Boston couple, Gail and Tom Hartman. Due to Tom’s demanding job as an architect, their marriage is strained. To escape the tension, Gail takes their son Roarke on a rafting trip down Idaho’s Salmon River. Accompanied by their dog Maggie, they leave behind their daughter Willa with Gail’s parents in Idaho. Unexpectedly, Tom joins them at the last minute after staying in Boston. During their journey, they encounter three friendly rafters named Wade, Terry, and Frank. However, the Hartmans soon notice that Frank has left the group after an argument during a day break. As it turns out, Frank was their guide and Wade and Terry have no experience in rafting.

Gail volunteers to guide them for the remainder of their journey down the river. However, Maggie’s curiosity leads her off into the brush further up the canyon before they can get back on the water. Tom is quick to retrieve her before she discovers anything and they all return to the raft. That evening, after a day of rafting, they set up camp for the night. Despite this, Tom remains focused on his architectural project, causing Roarke to feel neglected. Later, Wade and Terry arrive and join in on celebrating Roarke’s birthday. However, Gail agrees with Tom that it would be best to split from Wade and Terry due to suspicious behavior on their part. The group’s plans are disrupted when Wade and Terry take off first with Roarke on their raft. In an attempt to escape, Gail and Tom try to leave with Roarke while Wade and Terry are distracted.
