The Roundup (2022)

Directed by Lee Sang-yong, The Roundup (2022) is a South Korean crime action film that centers around Detective Ma Seok-do and Captain Jeon Il-man. Together, they embark on a mission to Ho Chi Minh city, Vietnam to extradite Yoo Jong-hoon, a suspect wanted for his involvement in a brutal murder case. Upon arriving in Vietnam, they encounter a group of Koreans living there and begin to piece together the events leading up to Choi Yong-gi’s kidnapping and death at the hands of Kang Hae-sang, a violent killer who has been targeting Koreans and tourists for money. As they delve deeper into their investigation, they stumble upon the lifeless body of Choi Yong-gi in the garden of Kang’s hideout. Despite local police warnings, Ma and Il-man refuse to give up on their search for justice as they continue to gather evidence and interrogate suspects such as Raku, a Korean thug with ties to the case. It is revealed that Choi’s father, Choi Choon-baek, had sent hitmen to take out Kang as revenge for his son’s death.

As Kang arrives at the house, he eliminates all the hired killers who provide information about Choon-baek. Shortly after, Ma appears and subdues Kang, but he manages to flee. Upon their return to Korea, Ma and Il-man discover that Kang has successfully smuggled himself into the country in order to meet with Choon-baek. To gather more information, Ma questions Jang I-soo, who is now operating an export service. Through this conversation, they discover that a smuggling boat has recently arrived. Reviewing the footage from Gongping port confirms that Kang has indeed entered Korea. In response, Choon-baek offers a large reward for anyone able to capture Kang alive. Realizing that the case has been handed over to Foreign Affairs, Ma and Il-man negotiate with the Chief for a one-week deadline to apprehend Kang.
