The Royal Tenenbaums (2001)
The American comedy-drama film, The Royal Tenenbaums (2001), was directed by Wes Anderson and co-written with Owen Wilson. In the film, Royal Tenenbaum informs his three teenage children, Chas, Margot, and Richie, about his impending separation from his wife Etheline. Each of the children had achieved impressive accomplishments at a young age. Chas was a genius in both math and business, but Royal would often steal money from him. Margot, who was adopted, had received a grant for a play she wrote in ninth grade. Meanwhile, Richie excelled as a tennis prodigy and artist who conveyed his love for Margot through paintings. As for their neighbor and Richie’s best friend, Eli Cash was also an important figure in their lives. Additionally, Pagoda served as the trusted valet for the Tenenbaum household.
Twenty-two years down the line, Royal gets evicted from the hotel he has been residing in. The kids are going through a rough patch after their initial success, with Richie touring on a cruise ship after a breakdown. He confides in Eli about his love for Margot. Chas has become overly protective of his sons, Ari and Uzi, following his wife Rachael’s death in a plane crash. Meanwhile, Margot is wedded to neurologist Raleigh St. Clair, whom she conceals her smoking and tumultuous past from. Raleigh is conducting research on an individual known as Dudley Heinsbergen and diagnoses him with Heinsbergen Syndrome. Etheline’s accountant of many years, Henry Sherman, pops the question to her. Upon hearing about this from Pagoda, Royal falsely claims to have stomach cancer in an attempt to win back his family’s affection.
