The Rum Diary (2011)
The film adaptation of Hunter S. Thompson’s 1998 novel, The Rum Diary (2011), was directed by Bruce Robinson. Paul Kemp is a struggling author who takes a job at a newspaper in San Juan, Puerto Rico. He is quickly introduced to the ins and outs of the newspaper world by Sala, a staff photographer who predicts the newspaper’s eventual downfall. After settling into a hotel, Kemp crosses paths with Chenault, an alluring woman he meets while lounging on a boat in the ocean. Despite getting off on the wrong foot with his editor, E.J Lotterman, due to a night of heavy drinking with Sala, Kemp remains infatuated with Chenault. He also encounters Moburg, an unconventional reporter who seems to have job security despite his lack of productivity. While waiting for an interview, Kemp catches the attention of Hal Sanderson, a wealthy PR consultant who offers him freelance work writing promotional material for one of his business ventures.
Sanderson is engaged to Chenault, who pretends not to know Kemp. Later, Kemp moves in with Sala, who also rooms with Moburg. As he settles into his new living arrangements, Kemp begins to see the poverty of San Juan. However, Lotterman, his boss, explicitly forbids him from writing about it because it would negatively impact tourism. To Kemp’s surprise, Moburg reappears and gifts them with leftover filters containing high-proof alcohol from a rum plant he used to work at before getting fired. In a drunken fury, Moburg rants about his desire to kill Lotterman for firing him. Seeking distraction from the chaotic situation, Kemp visits Sanderson and catches him having sex with Chenault in the sea. This encounter leaves Kemp feeling uneasy about their relationship and opens his eyes to their true dynamic. While exploring the island further, Kemp meets Zimburger and Segarra, who are working on a business venture with Sanderson.
