The Running Man (1987), an American dystopian action film directed by Paul Michael Glaser, portrays a world in which the United States has transformed into a totalitarian police state. This drastic shift is the result of a global economic collapse. As a means of controlling its citizens, the government relies heavily on violent television shows. The most popular among them is The Running Man, a game show where convicted criminals are pitted against armed mercenaries known as ‘stalkers’ and must fight for their survival in order to win a pardon and tropical vacation. The story follows Captain Ben Richards, a police helicopter pilot who witnesses an unarmed food riot in Bakersfield, California. Despite being ordered to open fire on the rioters, Richards refuses and is taken into custody by his fellow officers.
In the aftermath, Richards is wrongly blamed for causing the deaths of 60 people and is ultimately sentenced to a labor camp. After 18 months, he flees alongside two resistance fighters, Harold Weiss and William Laughlin. Seeking safety, they join a camp run by Mick, the group’s leader. The resistance’s goal is to take over ICS broadcast network’s uplink facilities to reveal the government’s deceit. Although asked to assist, Richards declines and instead goes to his brother Edward’s apartment. However, he finds that Amber Mendez, a composer, now lives there and his brother has been sent to a ‘re-education’ camp. Using Mendez’s security travel pass as leverage, Richards takes her hostage on their escape towards Hawaii but is caught at the airport after she alerts security.
