The Sandman (2022 — 2024)
The Sandman (2022–2024) is an American fantasy drama series adapted from the 1989–1996 DC comic book by Neil Gaiman. Developed by Gaiman, David S. Goyer, and Allan Heinberg for Netflix, the show is produced by DC Entertainment and Warner Bros. Television. It follows the story of Dream / Morpheus, also known as the titular Sandman. Starring Tom Sturridge as the lead role, the series has received positive reviews from critics for its excellent casting, production design, costumes, faithfulness to the source material, visual effects, and standout performances by Sturridge and David Thewlis. In an attempt to secure eternal life, a wizard sets out to capture Death. However, instead of success, they manage to imprison her younger brother, Dream. Fearing for his well-being, the wizard keeps him confined in a glass bottle for many years. Ultimately, Dream (also known as Morpheus) escapes and embarks on a journey to retrieve his lost objects of power.
In his pursuit of the elusive Corinthian, Morpheus, also known as Dream, falls victim to an occult ceremony orchestrated by Roderick Burgess, a British aristocrat. Roderick’s motives for capturing Morpheus were twofold: he sought supernatural abilities to enhance his own power and wealth, as well as a misguided attempt to revive his deceased son, Randall. In this ritual, Roderick seizes Morpheus’s prized possessions – his helm, pouch of sand, and ruby – which are later snatched by his resentful lover Ethel Cripps, who is carrying Roderick’s child. As a result of Morpheus’s confinement, a devastating ‘sleepy sickness’ plagues the world for over a century. Fast forward to 2021, and Roderick’s son Alex has now aged into an elderly man; he takes on the responsibility of overseeing Morpheus’s imprisonment with the help of his partner Paul. However, after Paul accidentally interferes with the enchantments that keep Morpheus bound, the dream lord gains access to one of his guard’s dreams and breaks free from his cage. In doing so, he condemns Alex to an unending slumber.
