The Score (2001)
Directed by Frank Oz, The Score (2001) is an American neo-noir heist action comedy film. Following a close call during a burglary, master safe-cracker Nick Wells contemplates retirement and settling down with his girlfriend Diane to run his Montréal jazz club legitimately. Despite turning down his fence Max’s offer for another job, Nick is approached by fellow thief and ambitious mastermind Jack Teller. Attempting to scare Jack off, Nick sends his associate Burt, but Jack gains the upper hand and ends up at Nick’s home, persuading him to change his mind. In exchange for complete control of the operation and a $6 million cut from Max, Nick agrees to join the heist.
Their target is a royal sceptre that was smuggled into Canada but discovered by customs and currently stored in the heavily guarded basement of the Montréal Customs House. Using his cover as a mentally challenged janitor, Jack has managed to infiltrate the Customs House while Nick finds access to the basement through the sewers below. Feeling let down by Nick’s decision to handle the final score, Diane begins to reconsider their future together. Nick enlists the help of Steven, a fellow hacker, who successfully breaches the security system of Customs House in order to obtain bypass codes. However, their actions are discovered by a systems administrator who demands $50,000 for the information. To make the exchange, the administrator arranges to meet in a public park with his cousin for backup.
