The Sea Beast (2022)
In 2022, Chris Williams directed The Sea Beast, an animated adventure film. Alongside co-writer Nell Benjamin and producer Jed Schlanger, he tells the story of sea beasts who have terrorized humankind for centuries. To combat them, brave crews embark on hunting expeditions aboard their ships. The most renowned crew is that of the Inevitable, led by the legendary Captain Crow, his first mate Sarah Sharpe, and his adopted son and boatswain Jacob Holland. These hunters are backed by The Crown’s King and Queen through the Three Bridges Society, recognizing their past achievements. Following a near-death experience on a hunt, Crow promises to make Jacob captain once they defeat “Red Bluster”, who was responsible for taking his left eye years ago.
Upon returning to Three Bridges, the crew seeks payment for their recent catch. However, the King and Queen relay the news that they will soon be replaced by the modern naval vessel Imperator, led by Admiral Eric Hornagold. The reason behind this decision is that the hunters are considered too costly and outdated. Naturally, Crow and Sarah are frustrated by this development and their frustration nearly lands them in trouble with the law. In a moment of quick thinking, Jacob suggests that his crew be given a final opportunity to prove their worth by taking down Red Bluster. Admiral Hornagold agrees, with the Crown announcing a competition between Imperator and Inevitable. Whichever crew manages to defeat the sea beasts will earn the right to hunt in their name. Before setting sail again, the crew discovers a stowaway on board – an orphan girl named Maisie Brumble who was inspired by her late parents’ careers as hunters to join them on their journey.
