The Secret Agent (1996)
The Secret Agent is a 1996 British drama-thriller film written and directed by Christopher Hampton and starring Bob Hoskins and Patricia Arquette. It is adapted from Joseph Conrad’s 1907 novel of the same name. Late 19th century London. The city has become a haven for partisans, refugees and anarchists who undermine the political structure of the state. A young girl, Winnie, cannot take care of herself and her half-witted brother Stevie, so she marries a man much older than her. Verloc works in a local shop, and also trades as a spy for the Russian embassy.
A secret agent receives a mission that leads to tragic events that forever ruin the lives of Verloc and his wife, whom he sincerely loves. Verloc can no longer correct his mistakes, since by his actions he launched a whole chain of tragedies. Police Inspector Heat is investigating cases, who does not even suspect what kind of binding he got into
