The Secret in Their Eyes (2009)
Produced, edited, and directed by Juan José Campanella, The Secret in Their Eyes (2009) is an Argentine-Spanish crime drama film based on Eduardo Sacheri’s novel La pregunta de sus ojos. In 1974, judiciary agent Benjamin Espósito investigates the rape and murder of Liliana Colotto de Morales. He vows to her husband Ricardo to find the killer and ensure a life sentence. As he delves into the case with his partner Pablo Sandoval, who struggles with alcoholism, they are joined by their new department chief Irene Menéndez-Hastings. Espósito’s rival Romano points the finger at two construction workers, one of whom is a Bolivian immigrant, causing Espósito’s frustration upon discovering their forced confession after being tortured. However, while looking at old photos of Liliana that Ricardo gave him, Espósito finds a potential lead – a man named Isidoro Gómez who appears frequently in the pictures with an obsessive stare.
Espósito and Sandoval sneak into Gómez’s mother’s house in Chivilcoy, where they come across some letters from Gómez to his mother. Sandoval takes them without Espósito’s knowledge, and upon their return to Buenos Aires, Espósito learns about the theft. Unfortunately, their unauthorized ‘visit’ only creates problems with their superiors and yields no useful information from the stolen letters. As a result, Gómez remains at large due to a careless phone call made by Ricardo to Gómez’s mother in a desperate attempt to find his wife’s killer. In the end, the case is closed. However, in 1975 when Espósito meets Ricardo at a train station in Retiro, he discovers that Ricardo had been searching for Gómez at multiple stations. This prompts Espósito to convince Menéndez to reopen the investigation. Meanwhile, while drinking at a bar, Sandoval makes an unexpected discovery: someone he knows identifies several names on the stolen letters as players from Racing Football Club.
