The Shawshank Redemption (1994), a prison drama film, was written and directed by Frank Darabont. The film is based on the 1982 novella Rita Hayworth and Shawshank Redemption by Stephen King. Set in the late 1940s, it follows the story of Andy Dufresne, a former banker from Portland, Maine who is sentenced to two consecutive life terms for the murders of his wife and her lover. At Shawshank State Prison, Andy befriends Ellis ‘Red’ Redding, a fellow inmate serving a life sentence for smuggling contraband. With Red’s help, Andy acquires a rock hammer and a large poster of Rita Hayworth. A few years later, in 1949, Andy overhears Byron Hadley, the captain of the guards, complaining about being taxed on an inheritance.

He offers to assist Hadley in legally sheltering his money. Following a nearly fatal assault by the Sisters, Andy is spared from further attacks. Hadley retaliates by injuring and sending Bogs to a different hospital. As a result of this ordeal, Warden Samuel Norton reassigns Andy to the dilapidated prison library where he utilizes his financial knowledge to assist fellow inmates, guards, and even the warden with their financial affairs. In addition, Andy diligently writes weekly letters to the state legislature in hopes of securing funds to improve the library’s condition. However, after 50 years of imprisonment, elderly inmate Brooks Hatlen is granted parole but struggles to adapt outside of prison walls.
