The Shining (1997) is a three-episode horror television miniseries based on Stephen King’s 1977 novel of the same name. Directed by Mick Garris and written by King himself, it is the second adaptation of the book after Stanley Kubrick’s 1980 film. King chose to create this version due to his dissatisfaction with Kubrick’s interpretation. The story focuses on Jack Torrance, a former teacher at a prestigious prep school who has lost his job due to his alcoholism and explosive temper. After violently assaulting his young son Danny while drunk, Jack is determined to turn his life around and keep his family together. He makes a promise to his wife Wendy that if he ever starts drinking again, he will leave them rather than continue living as an alcoholic. Now, sober and working as a writer, Jack takes on the role of caretaker at the Overlook Hotel in the Colorado Rockies. He sees this job as an opportunity to earn money and have time to finish writing his first play.
Upon arriving at the Overlook and meeting head cook Dick Hallorann, Danny discovers his psychic abilities include telepathy. He also has an adult guide named Tony who communicates with him through visions and foretells the future. Hallorann informs Danny that he too possesses a shine, allowing them to connect telepathically whenever needed. After a tour of the hotel, the Torrances are left on their own for the winter. However, it becomes clear that a malevolent entity resides within the hotel and is determined to use Danny for its own mysterious purposes. The presence makes itself known through flickering lights, eerie voices, and even a masquerade from the hotel’s past. Danny is the first to recognize the darkness within, as his visions have warned him of what lies ahead for himself and his parents during their stay.
