The Sicilian (1987)
The film The Sicilian (1987), directed by Michael Cimino, is a sweeping historical crime drama. Its screenplay was written by Steve Shagan and later revised by both Cimino and Gore Vidal, based on Mario Puzo’s novel of the same title from 1984. The story follows Salvatore Giuliano, a notorious bandit who leads a group of rebels in an attempt to liberate Sicily from Italian control during the early 1950s and turn it into an American state.
As he robs from wealthy landowners and gives to the impoverished peasants, they begin to idolize him as their savior. But with his rising popularity comes a growing ego, causing him to believe he is immune to the power of his financial supporter, Mafia Don Masino Croce. In retaliation, Don Croce enlists the help of Giuliano’s closest advisor Gaspare ‘Aspanu’ Pisciotta to carry out an assassination plot against him.
