Set during the Second World War, it depicts the dynamics between a Frenchman and his granddaughter and a German captain who occupies their home during the German occupation of France.

France, 1941. Amidst the Nazi Occupation, a German Wehrmacht captain named Werner von Ebrennac seeks lodging from a man and his granddaughter, Jeanne Larosière. Jeanne is a young piano teacher and her grandfather reluctantly agrees to host the officer. Despite being on opposing sides, Werner expresses his adoration for French culture through his perfect French and his talent as a classical pianist and composer. However, Jeanne and her grandfather respond with unrelenting silence, their way of showing defiance against the German occupation. At first, Jeanne tries to ignore Werner’s presence but she eventually becomes enamored by him.
