The Skin of the Wolf (2017) is a Spanish drama film directed by Samu Fuentes. Living in solitude on a mountaintop in an abandoned town, Martinon’s rugged appearance and isolated lifestyle intimidate those he encounters. His daily routine involves tending to his goats, maintaining his land and setting traps for wolves that he trades their skins. Surrounding his rocky home are steep hills and a dense forest teeming with wildlife. During a trip to the nearby town, Martinon collects a bounty for wolf skin from the mayor, who haggles over the price. The bar owner Severino suggests that Martinon consider marriage and starting a family to pass on his property as his legacy.
After considering the idea, Martinon realizes that his mountain lifestyle is not suitable for raising a family. On his way out of town, he has a romantic encounter with a local woman named Pascuala. To secure her as his wife, Martinon strikes a deal with her father Ubaldo and pays him a sum of money. Pascuala adjusts well to her new home, but begins experiencing an unknown illness marked by persistent coughing. She also reveals to Martinon that she is expecting their child. Though he does not show any verbal or facial reaction, Martinon starts building a crib for the baby. As Pascuala’s health declines, she struggles through a difficult pregnancy and ultimately passes away while giving birth to a stillborn son. Martinon, unaware of these events as he tends to the goats, is devastated by the loss of both his wife and child. In his grief and frustration, he breaks the very crib he had been constructing for his newborn son.
