The fantasy adventure comedy film, The Smurfs (2011), is based on the comic series by Belgian artist Peyo. In their village, the Smurfs are getting ready for their annual Blue Moon Festival when Papa Smurf has a vision of Clumsy Smurf and an evil wizard named Gargamel. His vision involves Clumsy accidentally leading Gargamel to the village while picking smurfroot. Papa Smurf sets up traps and flings Gargamel into the air, allowing the rest of the Smurfs to escape. However, Clumsy unknowingly runs towards the Forbidden Falls with a group of other Smurfs following him – Papa, Smurfette, Grouchy, Brainy and Gutsy. As they approach the falls, they are suddenly transported to modern day New York City by a vortex created by the Blue Moon. Meanwhile, Gargamel and his cat Azrael also end up in New York and follow the Smurfs to an apartment belonging to Patrick and Grace Winslow – a couple expecting their first child. After explaining their situation, the Winslows offer them help and shelter.
The following day, in need of a ‘stargazer’, the Smurfs track down Patrick to his workplace at Anjelou Cosmetics, under the assumption that he possesses fortune-telling abilities. Meanwhile, Gargamel obtains Smurf essence from a lock of Smurfette’s hair, which grants him magical powers. As he searches for the Smurfs, he coincidentally finds himself in Anjelou where he impresses Odile, Patrick’s boss, by using his newfound magic to restore her aging mother’s youth. Upon learning about Patrick’s link to the Smurfs, Gargamel pursues both him and the blue creatures into FAO Schwarz, causing destruction in his pursuit. Despite being arrested and locked up, he eventually escapes with the help of a swarm of flies. Using a toy telescope borrowed from the store, Papa calculates when they can all return home under the stars but will have to figure out a spell first.
