The Social Network (2010)
The American biographical drama film, The Social Network (2010), directed by David Fincher and written by Aaron Sorkin, is based on the 2009 book The Accidental Billionaires by Ben Mezrich. On October 28, 2003, Mark Zuckerberg – a 19-year-old Harvard University sophomore – is dumped by his girlfriend Erica Albright. After returning to his dorm room, Zuckerberg uses his LiveJournal blog to post an insulting message about Albright. Seeking revenge for the breakup, he creates a website called Facemash where visitors can rate the attractiveness of female students whose photos he downloaded from house face books. This leads to heavy traffic causing parts of Harvard’s computer network to crash and consequently placing Zuckerberg on six months of academic probation.
However, the popularity of Facemash catches the attention of Cameron and Tyler Winklevoss – twins – along with their business partner Divya Narendra. The trio invites Zuckerberg to work with them on Harvard Connection – an exclusive social network aimed at dating amongst Harvard students. Zuckerberg brings up Thefacebook, a networking site solely for Ivy League students, to his pal Eduardo Saverin. With $1,000 in seed money from Saverin, Zuckerberg creates the website, and it rapidly gains popularity. However, upon hearing about Thefacebook, the Winklevoss twins and Narendra are furious, convinced that Zuckerberg deceived them by stalling work on their Harvard Connection website while stealing their concept. They voice their frustration to Harvard President Larry Summers, who disregards the idea of taking action against Thefacebook or Zuckerberg.
