Directed by Edgar Wright, The Sparks Brothers (2021) is a documentary that delves into the story of Ron and Russell Mael, the talented duo behind the pop and rock band Sparks. The film premiered at the 2021 Sundance Film Festival on January 30 and was later released in North America on June 18 by Focus Features. Through extensive interviews with Ron and Russell Mael, as well as other notable musicians such as Beck, Flea, Steve Jones, Alex Kapranos, Stephen Morris, Gillian Gilbert, Vince Clarke, Andy Bell, Thurston Moore, and Nick Rhodes, The Sparks Brothers offers an insightful look into the band’s journey. Though Björk is heard through an audio clip in the documentary, she does not make an appearance in the film itself.
Raised in 1960s Los Angeles, brothers Ron and Russell were avid fans of popcorn matinees and pop music. However, it wasn’t until their school talent shows put them in the spotlight that they embarked on a musical journey as Sparks, eventually creating 25 studio albums. Director Edgar Wright’s latest project delves into the band’s 50-year history, using animations and interviews with longtime collaborators like Giorgio Moroder and Tony Visconti to bring their innovative sound to life. Along with former members of Sparks, including TV producer Jonathan Ross and rock journalist Paul Morley, the film features familiar faces such as Jason Schwartzman and Mike Myers offering their insights. Adding to the documentary’s charm are some humorous animated stories featuring comedians Simon Pegg (as John Lennon) and Nick Frost (as Ringo Starr).
