The Specialist (1994)
The Specialist (1994), an American action thriller directed by Luis Llosa, follows the story of Ray Quick and Ned Trent, two CIA operatives with expertise in explosives. During a mission to destroy a car carrying a South American cocaine dealer, they discover that there is also a young girl inside. Despite Ray’s objections, Ned proceeds with the detonation, resulting in the death of both the dealer and the child. Enraged by Ned’s actions, Ray confronts him and reports him to their superiors before leaving the CIA. Years later in Miami, Ray works as a freelance hitman and often communicates with his potential clients over the phone. One day, he receives a call from May Munro, who seeks revenge for her parents’ murder at the hands of Tomas Leon and his gang.
Initially hesitant, Ray ultimately agrees to help May infiltrate Tomas’ world. With May determined to take down Tomas regardless of his involvement, she manages to earn his trust and becomes close to him as Adrian Hastings. Ned is currently employed by Joe Leon, who serves as the director of their organized crime syndicate and also happens to be Tomas’ father. As attacks on their subordinates escalate, they turn to the chief of police for assistance and assign Ned to the bomb squad. To keep an eye on the situation, May pretends to be Tomas’ girlfriend and reluctantly joins forces with Ned, who had planned to lure out a fugitive named Ray. Due to a failed mission in South America, Ned was fired from his position at the CIA and is now determined to seek revenge.
