The Stand (1994), an American post-apocalyptic television miniseries based on Stephen King’s 1978 novel of the same name, features King himself as a minor character and also includes his teleplay. In the series, on June 13 at a top-secret government laboratory in Northern California, a weaponized version of influenza named Project Blue accidentally escapes. This causes U.S. Army soldier Charlie Campion, along with his wife and daughter, to flee and unknowingly spread the virus across the country. On June 17, Campion crashes near Stu Redman and his friends at an Arnette gas station. After losing his family to the superflu, Campion warns Redman about a ‘Dark Man’ who was pursuing him before he too succumbs to the virus. The following day, General Starkey orders the military to quarantine the town in response to Project Blue. The survivors are taken to a CDC facility in Stovington, Vermont where only Stu is able to withstand the virus which has become known as ‘Captain Trips’ and has already killed 99.4% of the world’s population within two weeks.
Among the survivors are aspiring rock star Larry Underwood, deaf and mute Nick Andros, Frannie Goldsmith and her unborn child, teenage neighbor Harold Lauder, imprisoned criminal Lloyd Henreid, and ‘Trashcan Man’, a mentally ill arsonist and scavenger. They are all experiencing visions from either Mother Abagail or Randall Flagg. These visions implore them to either travel to Nebraska to meet Abagail or go to Las Vegas to join Flagg. Flagg offers Lloyd his freedom in exchange for becoming his second in command. He also directs Trashcan Man to Las Vegas after he destroys fuel tanks across the Midwest. Another survivor, Larry, escapes New York City with a young woman named Nadine Cross. However, Nadine is unable to pursue a relationship with Larry due to her visions of Flagg commanding her to join him. She leaves Larry on her own journey. Later on, Larry meets Lucy Swann, a school teacher, and Joe – whom she refers to as a traumatized boy – outside the burnt ruins of Des Moines, Iowa.
