The Station Agent (2003)
The Station Agent (2003) is an American comedy-drama film written and directed by Tom McCarthy in his directorial debut. The main character, Finbar McBride, is a quiet and unmarried man with dwarfism who has a deep passion for railroads. He spends most of his time working at a hobby shop in Hoboken, New Jersey, owned by his elderly and equally reserved friend Henry. Being uncomfortable with the attention brought on by his size, Fin keeps to himself. However, after Henry’s passing, Fin discovers that he has inherited a rural property with an abandoned train depot. Hoping for solitude, he moves into the old building but eventually becomes reluctantly involved in the lives of his neighbors. Among them are Cuban American Joe Oramas, who runs his father’s roadside snack truck while the elder man recovers from an illness; and Olivia Harris, an artist trying to navigate through the death of her young son and its impact on her marriage to David, whom she is separated from.
At their first and subsequent encounters, Olivia and Fin experience a dangerous distraction while driving. Cleo, a young girl with a keen interest in trains like Fin’s, asks him to give a talk to her class about them. Emily, the local librarian, finds out she is pregnant by her unreliable boyfriend and is disheartened. Joe, an optimistic and chatty person, breaks through Fin’s reserved demeanor. They go for walks along the railway tracks every day, and one time Olivia gifts Fin with a movie camera. To capture some footage, Joe drives beside a passing train while Fin films it. After watching the video and spending the night at Olivia’s house, Joe and Fin are surprised by David’s unexpected visit the next morning. As their friendship blossoms tentatively, Olivia falls into a deep depression and vanishes without any warning.
