The Stendhal Syndrome (1996)
The Stendhal Syndrome (1996) is an Italian giallo film written and directed by Dario Argento, starring his daughter Asia Argento. Detective Anna Manni travels to Florence in pursuit of Alfredo Grossi, a serial rapist and murderer. During a museum visit, Anna experiences Stendhal syndrome – a condition that causes overwhelming emotions when viewing art. Taking advantage of her vulnerability, Alfredo kidnaps and brutalizes her, leaving her deeply traumatized. Despite escaping, Anna is relentlessly pursued by Alfredo until she finally turns the tables on him. In a fierce struggle, she wounds him and sends him tumbling into a river. Believing him to be dead, the police search for his body while Anna meets and falls in love with Marie, a young French art student.
Anna seeks therapy to address her deep-seated emotional issues. These are further exacerbated when she receives calls from the allegedly deceased Alfredo. In light of Marie’s murder, Anna’s psychologist visits her at home due to concerns about her mental state. During his visit, Anna’s coworker, Marco, informs her that Alfredo’s body has been found, prompting the psychologist to confront her about the truth – that she is in fact responsible for Marie’s death. As Marco arrives at Anna’s apartment, he discovers that she has also killed her psychologist. In a struggle to disarm Anna, she reveals that Alfredo is controlling her actions and murders Marco as well. The police eventually apprehend Anna after she wanders the streets following these events.
