The film The Sting (1973) takes place in September of 1936, during the Great Depression. It follows two skilled con artists as they attempt to swindle a mob boss. Their first scam in Joliet, Illinois brings in $11,000, but Hooker’s luck turns when he loses his share in a rigged roulette game. His partner Luther, on the other hand, decides to retire after their big score. Before leaving, he advises Hooker to seek out his old acquaintance Henry Gondorff in Chicago for ‘the big con’. However, their victim turns out to be working for corrupt police officer William Snyder and notorious gangster Doyle Lonnegan. After Luther and the victim are murdered by Lonnegan’s men, Hooker flees to Chicago upon discovering their deaths.

Hooker discovers Gondorff inebriated and in hiding from the FBI, operating a carousel that disguises a brothel. He seeks Gondorff’s assistance in taking down Lonnegan, but initially faces resistance. Eventually, Gondorff agrees and assembles a skilled team of con artists. Together, they plan to revive an outdated scheme known as ‘the wire’, using a large group to create a fake off-track betting parlor. Meanwhile, Snyder and Lonnegan’s men track Hooker to Chicago; Gondorff cautions Hooker that if they catch him, their elaborate plan will crumble. On board the luxurious 20th Century Limited train, Gondorff assumes the persona of boorish Chicago bookie ‘Shaw’ and joins Lonnegan’s exclusive poker game.
