The Sugarland Express (1974)
The Sugarland Express (1974) is an American crime drama film, marking Steven Spielberg’s directorial debut in the theatrical world. Lou Jean Poplin pays a visit to her incarcerated husband, Clovis Michael Poplin, informing him that their son will soon be placed under foster care. Despite his release being only four months away, she persuades him to escape and aid her in retrieving their child. Hitching a ride from the prison with a couple, they are eventually stopped by Texas Department of Public Safety Patrolman Maxwell Slide. In the ensuing chaos, the felons take control of the vehicle and flee with Slide as their unwilling captive. As they continue on their journey, the group grows larger and includes police cars, news vans, private vehicles, and helicopters.
The Poplins and Slide traverse through several cities in Texas including Beaumont, Dayton, Houston, Cleveland, Conroe, and ultimately Wheelock. By keeping Slide as their captive, they are able to consistently refuel their vehicle and satisfy their hunger through the drive-through. During their prolonged journey, Slide forms a bond with the pair and they develop a mutual respect for one another. Eventually, the trio arrives at the foster parents’ residence where they come across multiple law enforcement officials, including Captain Harlin Tanner who has been pursuing them relentlessly. Unfortunately, Clovis is shot and killed by a pair of Texas Rangers and after another intense car chase, Lou Jean is apprehended by the Texas Department of Public Safety. Luckily, Patrolman Slide is found unharmed.
