The Sunchaser (1996)
The film The Sunchaser (1996) is a road crime drama, directed by Michael Cimino. It follows the story of Brandon ‘Blue’ Monroe, a sixteen-year-old half-Navajo gang member from East L.A., who is serving time in prison for murdering his abusive stepfather. During his annual medical visit, Blue receives devastating news from Dr. Michael Reynolds, a wealthy and materialistic oncologist with a wife and daughter. He is told that he has abdominal cancer and only has a short time left to live. Determined to find healing from a medicine man he knew in Arizona when he was eight years old, Blue takes Michael hostage at gunpoint and forces him to drive them to a nearby garage where they switch cars. Their journey leads them to Dibé Nitsaa, one of the six sacred mountain lakes of the Navajo people, believed to have healing powers for those who swim in its waters.
Michael laments his being taken in by Blue, seeking aid from anyone he encounters and expressing disappointment that he will miss a dinner event where he could have been made head of the oncology department. The two men clash immediately, as they differ in education, social standing, ethnicity, and perspectives on life. Michael trusts in modern medicine to have all the solutions for human ailments, while Blue follows traditional Native American beliefs that honor the spiritual realm, sacred places, and herbal remedies. On their way to Arizona, they have a difficult encounter with a gang of bikers in a small town and end up being chased. Eventually, Michael is bitten by a rattlesnake but promptly receives treatment from Blue using natural remedies without any medical equipment.
