The Tailor of Panama (2001)
The Tailor of Panama (2001) is a spy thriller film directed by John Boorman, co-written by John le Carré and Andrew Davies. It is based on le Carré’s 1996 novel of the same name. The story follows Andy Osnard, an MI6 spy who has been sent to Panama after an affair with the foreign minister’s mistress in Madrid. Despite his superior’s warning about the corruption in Panama, Osnard sees it as an opportunity. He consults a list of British citizens living in Panama and meets Harry Pendel, a talented tailor who serves many elite clients, including the President. Pendel, known for his gift of storytelling, presents himself as a former Savile Row tailor, but he is actually an ex-convict who used to con people alongside his late uncle Benny. Harry’s American wife Louisa works as an assistant at the Panama Canal Authority and is unaware of her husband’s criminal past.
Although Harry is a skilled tailor, he struggles as a businessman and constantly owes debt to the bank, including $50,000 from a failed farming business that Louisa had invested in. In need of funds, Pendel accepts Osnard’s offer to provide information about the elite in exchange for financial support. With this money, he is able to pay off debts and assist his friends Mickie and Marta, who have fallen on hard times due to various circumstances. However, Osnard becomes dissatisfied with the quality of the information provided and threatens to expose Pendel’s involvement with a foreign government if he does not deliver more valuable details. In response, Pendel begins embellishing his stories, exaggerating the roles of his acquaintances to make them seem more influential than they actually are.
