The Tender Bar (2021)

The Tender Bar (2021), directed by George Clooney and written by William Monahan, is an American coming-of-age film. In 1973, nine-year-old JR Maguire returns to his grandparents’ home on Long Island with his mother Dorothy after being abandoned by his father Johnny, who was a radio personality known as “the Voice”. Growing up in a working class family, JR finds a father figure in his uncle Charlie, the owner of a local bar called “The Dickens”. While listening to the Voice on the radio and eagerly awaiting Johnny’s promised visits and baseball games, JR is consistently let down and eventually learns that his father has fled the state. Charlie becomes JR’s mentor, sharing life lessons and sparking an interest in writing. Meanwhile, Dorothy is determined to provide her son with opportunities she never had herself. Despite her own father’s lack of success despite his education, she sets her sights high for JR and insists he will attend either Harvard or Yale and become a lawyer.
Johnny briefly visits, bashing Charlie for teasing him about not being present in JR’s life. When Charlie stands up to a school counselor who was using JR to pursue Dorothy, he is impressed by his nephew’s writing skills. JR’s grandfather joins him for a father-son breakfast and reveals that Dorothy underwent surgery to remove her cancerous thyroid. She makes a full recovery and JR’s talent for word puzzles lands him a spot on Charlie and his friends’ bowling team. During his teenage years, JR interviews at Yale and meets a priest during his train ride to New Haven. He is accepted into the prestigious university, bringing joy to his family, and later brings his roommates home to meet Charlie where they have their first legal drinks at The Dickens. JR also begins dating Sidney, a fellow classmate from Westport, Connecticut whom he brings back home with him.
