The Terror (1963), an American independent horror film, was produced and directed by Roger Corman and stars Boris Karloff and Jack Nicholson. Nicholson portrays a French officer who is seduced by Helene, a shapeshifting devil disguised as a woman. In 1806, André Duvalier, a lost French soldier, is rescued by Helene, who bears a striking resemblance to Ilsa von Leppe, the late wife of Baron von Leppe. As André delves into Helene’s true identity, he discovers the Baron’s darkest secret: after catching his wife with another man, he killed her while his servant killed her lover. For two years since the incident, the Baron has been haunted by Ilsa’s ghost. After much hesitation, he finally decides to atone for his sins by facing his demons head on.

Unknown to him, Ilsa’s spirit is under the control of a peasant witch named Katrina. After stopping the Baron from ending his life, André and Stefan, the Baron’s right-hand man, capture Katrina and compel her to obey. She discloses that she is the mother of a man named Eric, whom she believes was murdered by the Baron two decades ago. Seeking retribution for her son’s death, she aims to condemn the Baron’s soul to eternal damnation. Upon Stefan’s revelation that it was actually the Baron who died and Eric took his place out of guilt (hence why he has stayed in the castle for 20 years), it becomes clear that Eric has convinced himself that he is truly Baron von Leppe.
