While on their way to the Dallas Cotton Bowl for the Texas-OU football game, two high school seniors named Buzz and Rick encounter a pickup truck on a desolate stretch of Texas highway. In their drunken state, they use their car phone to harass radio DJ Vanita ‘Stretch’ Brock live on air. Despite her attempts to get them to hang up, Stretch is forced to keep the line open. Suddenly, Leatherface appears from the back of the pickup truck and tears through the roof with his chainsaw as it passes by again. Rick attempts to shoot Leatherface with his revolver, but he only manages to kill Buzz. The car crashes shortly after, resulting in Rick’s death as well.
The next day, Lieutenant Boude ‘Lefty’ Enright, a former Texas Ranger and uncle of Leatherface’s previous victims Sally and Franklin Hardesty, arrives at the crime scene to aid in solving Buzz and Rick’s murders. For thirteen years, Lefty has been investigating his nephew’s disappearance and the string of mysterious chainsaw killings in Texas. His investigation is aided when Stretch brings him a copy of the audio tape from the attack. After sending her away, Lefty reluctantly attends a Texas/Oklahoma Chili Cookoff with his coworkers Stretch and L. G. Peters for their radio show. The cookoff’s winner happens to be Drayton Sawyer, current patriarch of the cannibalistic Sawyer family, who boasts about his ability to find ‘quality meat’.
