Private Witt of the United States Army goes AWOL in 1942 and lives amongst Melanesian natives in the South Pacific. However, he is eventually discovered and confined on a troopship by First Sergeant Welsh. Due to his actions, Witt is not allowed to rejoin his unit and is instead assigned as a stretcher bearer for an upcoming campaign. C Company, led by Capt. James Staros, has been called to Guadalcanal to reinforce the efforts in securing Henderson Field from Japanese forces and blocking their route to Australia. As they await their fate on a Navy transport ship, the men contemplate their lives and the impending invasion.
After arriving on Guadalcanal without opposition, the company continues towards their objective, encountering natives and signs of Japanese presence along the way. By dawn the next day, they reach their target: Hill 210, a strategically important enemy position. As they begin their attack, Charlie Company is met with intense gunfire from heavy machine guns, forcing them to retreat. One squad, under the leadership of Sergeant Keck, seeks shelter behind a nearby knoll while waiting for backup. However, when they come under fire once again, Keck accidentally pulls the pin on a grenade and sacrifices himself to protect his comrades. Meanwhile, Sergeant Welsh attempts to save a dying soldier but unknowingly administers enough morphine to end his life instead.
