The Thirty Nine Steps (1978)
The British thriller film, The Thirty Nine Steps (1978), directed by Don Sharp, follows the story of a retired British Intelligence officer, Colonel Scudder. In 1914 London, Imperial German spies are lurking everywhere. As important British politicians fall victim to mysterious assassinations, Scudder realizes that his life and his enigmatic black notebook are at risk. Seeking help, he turns to Richard Hannay, a mining engineer visiting Great Britain for a short time before returning to the Union of South Africa. Ironically enough, Hannay is staying in the same building as Scudder’s flat. Scudder reveals a plot orchestrated by Prussian ‘sleeper’ agents to instigate a world war against the Triple Entente alliance (future Allied powers) by targeting the Royal Greek prime minister while on a visit to the UK.
Despite initial mistrust, Hannay reluctantly offers Scudder refuge in his flat. The following morning, Hannay leaves for Strathallan in Scotland to buy a train ticket while Scudder stays behind to work on his notes. As the Prussian agents attempt to enter, Scudder escapes via the fire escape but is soon discovered. He quickly mails his secret notebook and then heads to St Pancras railway station, where he plans to give Hannay another black book. However, just as he reaches Hannay, the agents catch up and murder him. In his last moments, Scudder gives Hannay a message that leaves him puzzled.
