The Thomas Crown Affair (1999), an American romantic heist film directed by John McTiernan, portrays a group of thieves attempting to steal an entire gallery of paintings from the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Their plan involves sneaking into the museum inside a Trojan horse, but they are ultimately caught. However, in the chaos that ensues, it is revealed that billionaire Thomas Crown was actually behind the elaborate scheme and has managed to make off with Monet’s painting of San Giorgio Maggiore at Dusk. The theft catches the attention of NYPD Detective Michael McCann, who leads the investigation with assistance from insurance investigator Catherine Banning. In order to conceal the missing artwork, Crown loans a Pissarro to take its place in the museum and becomes a suspect in Banning’s eyes.

During the dinner, Banning arranges for a duplicate set of Crown’s keys to be made. Later on, she and her team conduct a thorough search of his home and come across a Monet painting. However, upon closer examination, it is discovered to be a mocking replica painted over a copy of Poker Sympathy from the Dogs Playing Poker series. After confronting Crown about this deceit, the two of them give into their mutual attraction and engage in a sexual encounter. Despite McCann’s surveillance, their playful game and secret rendezvous continue. Banning even accompanies Crown on a trip to Martinique where she realizes he is planning to flee, but declines his offer to join him when the time comes.
