The Thomas Crown Affair (1968)
The American heist film, The Thomas Crown Affair (1968), stars Steve McQueen and Faye Dunaway. Directed and produced by Norman Jewison, it received two Academy Award nominations and won for Best Original Song. The protagonist, Thomas Crown, is a wealthy thrill-seeker who meticulously plans a nearly perfect crime out of boredom. He orchestrates a five-person heist of $2,660,527.62 from a Boston bank with the help of a getaway driver who hides the money in a quiet cemetery trash can. Crown remains elusive throughout the operation, never meeting any of the men involved or revealing his true identity to them. He cleverly retrieves the money from its hiding spot and deposits it into an anonymous bank account in Geneva over several trips to avoid attracting unwanted attention.
Vicki Anderson, an independent investigator, has been hired by the bank’s insurance company to look into the recent heist. Incentivized by a 10% reward for recovering the stolen funds, Vicki makes a connection between the robbery and someone who is familiar with the bank’s routines due to having an account there. Together with the police, they compile a list of bank customers who have recently visited Geneva multiple times, believing that this is where the money may have been hidden. After seeing Crown’s name on the list, Vicki has a hunch that he could be responsible for orchestrating the heist. Soon after, she also figures out the method used to communicate among the robbers through cell phones.
