The Time Machine (1960) is an American post-apocalyptic science fiction film set in the late 19th century, based on H. G. Wells’ novel of the same name. On January 5, 1900, four friends gather at their inventor friend George’s home in London for dinner. However, when George suddenly appears looking worn out and fatigued, he shares his experience with them. Days earlier, at their New Year’s Eve dinner, George had mentioned his theory that time could be considered the fourth dimension. He then reveals a small scale model of a time machine and demonstrates how pressing a lever causes it to vanish in an instant. Despite George’s claims that it has traveled through time, his skeptical friends David Filby, Dr. Philip Hillyer, Anthony Bridewell, and Walter Kemp have their doubts.
As they leave George’s house for the night, Filby can’t shake off a feeling that something is not right with his friend. It is then revealed that George has a larger version of the time machine hidden in his private laboratory where he retreats to after their departure. As George continues his journey through time, he first stops in 1917 and meets James Filby, the son of an old acquaintance. Sadly, James informs him that his father perished in a war. Moving on to 1940 during the Blitz, George finds himself amidst another war, leaving him feeling disheartened. Fast forward to 1966, and he is confronted with people scurrying for safety as air raid sirens wail in the background. An elder James Filby implores George to seek shelter.
