The Time Traveler’s Wife (2022), a science fiction drama based on the 2003 novel by Audrey Niffenegger, was written and developed by Steven Moffat. Moffat had previously drawn inspiration from Niffenegger’s work for his contributions to Doctor Who. The show, directed by David Nutter and starring Rose Leslie and Theo James, premiered on HBO on May 15, 2022. Unfortunately, it was canceled after just one season in July of the same year. However, devoted fans were determined to save the series and launched a petition to garner interest from other streaming platforms. Despite their efforts, the show was ultimately removed from HBO Max in December 2022.
Blending romance and science fiction, the series follows the relationship between Henry DeTamble, a man with a genetic disorder which causes him to sporadically travel through time for short periods, and Clare Abshire, a woman who met an older version of Henry when she was a girl who told her they were married in the future. Much like the novel on which it is based, the series raises questions about determinism, free will, and identity.
