The Tommyknockers (1993), a TV miniseries, is based on the novel of the same name by Stephen King. It was aired on ABC and directed by John Power, with Lawrence D. Cohen as the writer. The story revolves around Bobbi Anderson, a Western fiction writer, and her boyfriend Jim ‘Gard’ Gardner, a poet living in Haven, Maine with their dog Peter. While Bobbi is struggling with writer’s block, Gard is recovering from alcoholism and has paused his writing. One day, they stumble upon an unidentified stone object buried in their backyard. As they unearth it, the townspeople start experiencing subtle changes like insomnia and basic telepathy. Some even begin making strange gadgets using household items such as kitchen tools, batteries and small appliances.
These inventions emit a green glow when activated. Gard is amazed by Bobbi’s ‘telepathic typewriter’, which produces a well-crafted novel about buffalo soldiers. As Bobbi compulsively uncovers more and more of the artifact, Gard’s skiing accident injury, in the form of a metal plate in his head, is suspected to be hindering the progress of others who are experiencing changes. Even the children are displaying transformations. For example, Hilly Brown uses his ‘magic machine’ on his brother Davey, causing him to vanish. Despite Sheriff Merrill leading an unsuccessful search for Davey, the town of Haven becomes immersed in their own inventions and drained of vitality and vigor, causing them to lose interest in finding him. This is especially evident in Davey’s parents Bryant and Marie.
