The Tourist (2010)
The Tourist (2010), an American romantic thriller movie co-written and directed by Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck, follows the story of Elise Clifton-Ward, a British woman. As she walks through downtown Paris, she is trailed by French police working with Scotland Yard under the command of Inspector John Acheson. Acheson has tirelessly searched for Alexander Pearce, Elise’s boyfriend who owes £744 million in unpaid taxes. Pearce is also being pursued by Reginald Shaw, a mobster from whom he stole $2.3 billion and who wants revenge. In a Parisian café, Elise receives instructions from Pearce to board a train to Venice, Italy and frame an innocent man as him to throw off the authorities. She destroys the note, evades the police and hops on the train.
On the train, Elise chooses Frank Tupelo, a math teacher from a college in Wisconsin. Acheson gleans information about the plan from the remains of a burned note. Unaware of her true intentions, a police officer on Shaw’s payroll tips him off that Pearce is also on the train with Elise headed to Venice. Without hesitation, Shaw heads straight to Venice. Once there, Elise invites Frank to join her at the Hotel Danieli, where she receives instructions from Pearce to attend a ball. She leaves Frank behind and he soon finds himself being pursued by Shaw’s henchmen. Amidst his escape attempt, he is apprehended by Italian police and a crooked inspector tries to hand him over for reward money from Shaw. Just in time, Elise saves Frank and leads Shaw’s men on an intense boat chase before ultimately making their getaway.
