An historical thriller film, The Tragedy of Macbeth (2021), was written, directed and produced by Joel Coen. It is based on William Shakespeare’s play, Macbeth. After leading King Duncan’s army to victory against the traitorous Thane of Cawdor, Macbeth and Banquo are approached by three witches on the battlefield. They predict that Macbeth will become the Thane of Cawdor (already holding the title of Glamis) and eventually be king. Meanwhile, Banquo’s descendants will also rule as kings. In response to the prophecy, King Duncan orders the execution of the Thane of Cawdor and gives the title to Macbeth. However, Macbeth becomes anxious when Duncan appoints his son Malcolm as prince of Cumberland, seeing it as an obstacle to his own ascension to the throne. He writes to Lady Macbeth about these revelations.

When Duncan stays at Macbeth’s castle, Lady Macbeth convinces her husband to kill the King. She drugs the servants, and Macbeth carries out the killing hesitantly. The next morning, Macduff discovers the body while Macbeth takes care of any loose ends by murdering the servants. Duncan’s heir Malcolm flees to England out of fear for his safety, leaving Macbeth to claim the throne as the new King. Fearing the prophecy about Banquo, Macbeth arranges for him and his son Fleance to be killed. The assassins, including Ross as a third accomplice, successfully murder Banquo. Ross then chases after Fleance through a field. As Macbeth’s paranoia grows, he becomes a tyrannical ruler who is feared by all. During a royal banquet, he has a hallucination and begins to scream at an apparition of Banquo.
