In the Eastern Kentucky Coalfield, an ongoing feud between the Tolliver and Falin clans has persisted for generations. With the arrival of engineer Jack Hale and his coal and railroad interests, tensions rise. After saving Dave Tolliver’s life and treating his gangrene injury, Hale gains favor with Dave’s cousin June, who was supposed to marry him. Hale also takes an interest in June’s brother Buddie, educating him and becoming a mentor figure. However, members of both families remain wary of this outsider.
Fuming about the blossoming love between Hale and June, Dave grabs a rifle and goes after Hale, but is taken by surprise by the Falins. The resulting chaos causes June to refuse going back home, so Hale arranges for her to stay with his sister in Louisville. During the turmoil, one of the Falins destroys a bridge and this leads to poor Buddie’s accidental death. A funeral is held and when June returns, she is now more worldly after her time in the city. Buck Falin, head of the family, expresses his condolences for her brother’s passing. Meanwhile, Dave gets shot in the back by Wade Falin. Both sides finally realize that the feud has gone too far.
