The Tree of Life (2011)
The American epic experimental coming-of-age drama film, The Tree of Life (2011), written and directed by Terrence Malick, follows the O’Brien family during two pivotal periods. In the 1960s, the family is thrown into turmoil upon learning of the death of their 19-year-old son, R.L. In contrast, in 2010, eldest son Jack struggles with his life as an architect in Dallas, Texas, feeling disillusioned and disappointed. Throughout the film, Mrs. O’Brien asks God why R.L. had to die while visuals show the creation of the universe and Earth’s beginnings. At one point, a compassionate dinosaur chooses not to harm an injured fellow dinosaur lying on a river bed. Ultimately, an asteroid collides with Earth.
During the 1940s in a suburban neighborhood of Waco, Texas, the O’Briens welcomed their new baby Jack and later his two brothers, R.L. and Stevie. As they grew up in the 1950s, Jack was torn between embracing grace or nature, as embodied by his parents. Mrs. O’Brien showed her sons a world filled with wonder, while Mr. O’Brien’s volatile temper revealed his struggle to balance his love for them with his belief that the world was corrupt and exploitative. He regretted not pursuing his passion for music and instead worked at a power plant, constantly trying to make money through patents for inventions.
