The Trial of the Chicago 7 (2020)

The Trial of the Chicago 7 (2020) is a gripping historical drama written and directed by Aaron Sorkin. Set in August of 1968, it follows the preparations made by Abbie Hoffman, Jerry Rubin, Tom Hayden, Rennie Davis, David Dellinger, Lee Weiner, John Froines, and Bobby Seale as they plan to protest at the Democratic National Convention in Chicago. Five months later, they are arrested and charged with inciting a riot by crossing state lines. Appointed as prosecutors by Attorney General John N. Mitchell are Tom Foran and Richard Schultz, while all defendants except Seale are represented by William Kunstler and Leonard Weinglass. Despite being unrelated to Abbie Hoffman, Judge Julius Hoffman shows clear bias towards the prosecution throughout the trial. Due to Judge Hoffman’s refusal to recognize his chosen attorney Charles Garry’s illness-related absence, Seale is forced to be represented by Kunstler instead.
The demand is rejected by both Kunstler and Seale. Seale receives support from Fred Hampton which Judge Hoffman believes is legal assistance. Abbie Hoffman openly provokes the court. Judge Hoffman dismisses two jurors who he suspects sympathize with the defendants due to alleged threats from the Black Panther Party and charges them and their lawyers with multiple counts of contempt of court. Tensions escalate between the defendants as numerous undercover police officers and FBI agents testify. During the convention, Hayden notices two police officers following Davis and attempts to release air from their tire, but is caught and later arrested. Abbie and others organize a demonstration at the police station where Hayden is held, but turn back upon encountering a police blockade outside. When they try to return to the park, police have taken over the hill with orders to disperse the crowd, resulting in a riot between law enforcement and protesters.
