The Truman Show (1998) is an American comedy drama film written by Andrew Niccol and directed by Peter Weir. The film focuses on the life of a man named Truman Burbank who was selected at birth and adopted by a television studio after an unwanted pregnancy. Unbeknownst to him, he is the main star of a reality TV show called The Truman Show. This program is broadcasted globally via approximately five thousand hidden cameras that capture every moment of Truman’s life. The creator and executive producer, Christof, aims to showcase Truman’s genuine emotions as a relatable everyman for audiences. The town where Truman resides, Seahaven Island, is constructed within a massive soundstage allowing Christof complete control over every aspect of Truman’s existence, even the weather.

Additionally, everyone in Truman’s world is an actor or crew member working to maintain the illusion and prevent him from uncovering the truth. Along with cleverly-disguised product placement, the show generates revenue. In order to keep Truman from leaving his fictional reality, Christof has carefully crafted the setting of his town on an island and has orchestrated scenarios designed to instill thalassophobia (a fear of the sea), including his father’s ‘death’ in a boating accident. The rest of the cast also contributes to Truman’s fears through messages promoting staying home and highlighting the dangers of travel. The producers’ plan is for Truman to fall for Meryl, a fellow student, and marry her. However, during his college years, he develops feelings for Sylvia, an extra.
