The Ugly Truth (2009)
The Ugly Truth (2009), an American romantic comedy film directed by Robert Luketic, follows Abby Richter, a morning show TV producer in Sacramento, California. Despite being a believer in true love, Abby is also drawn to self-help books like Chicken Soup for the Soul and Men Are from Mars, Women Are from Venus. After a disastrous date, Abby stumbles upon a segment of The Ugly Truth featuring Mike Chadway, known for his cynical views on relationships. She can’t resist calling into the show to argue with him. The next day, Abby learns that her show’s ratings are low and the station owner has hired Mike to do a segment on her show. Initially, their relationship is rocky as Abby sees Mike as crass and he views her as naive and controlling. However, when she meets Colin, the man of her dreams who happens to be her neighbor and a doctor, Mike convinces her that following his advice will improve her chances with him.
Despite Abby’s initial doubts, a deal is struck between her and Mike. Should he successfully orchestrate her courtship with Colin and prove his theories on relationships, she will happily collaborate with him. However, if Mike fails in this endeavor, he agrees to step away from the show. He eventually triumphs by improving the show’s ratings, bringing married anchors Georgia and Larry closer together, and advising Abby on how to appeal to Colin’s taste, including laughing at his jokes and praising his abilities in bed. As a result of his success, Mike receives an invitation to appear on The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson and is offered a job at another network. This sudden turn of events requires Abby to cancel her much-anticipated romantic weekend with Colin in order to fly to Los Angeles and convince Mike to remain with the show.
