In 2012, filmmaker Oliver Stone released a groundbreaking documentary series called The Untold History of the United States (2012–2013). Alongside historian Peter Kuznick, director of American University’s Nuclear Studies Institute, Stone delves into the complex reasons behind the Cold War, the controversial decision to drop atomic bombs on Japan, and America’s evolving role in the world since the fall of Communism. This project, which began in 2008, was co-written by Stone, Kuznick, and British screenwriter Matt Graham. Originally titled Oliver Stone’s Secret History of America, Kuznick expressed his disagreement with this title as he believed that many of these so-called secrets were actually reported in mainstream media such as The New York Times. He emphasized that this documentary would not focus on deep or dark conspiracies.
The series, directed and narrated by Stone, delves into overlooked aspects of American modern history. It explores the reasons for the Cold War and Truman’s decision to use atomic bombs on Japan, as well as America’s changing global role since the fall of Communism. With ten regular episodes and two prologue episodes, the series uncovers new archival material and previously unknown documents. Going beyond official narratives, it examines the deeper causes and implications of these events and their relevance to present times. Stone explains that he sees this project as a way to understand his own experiences and leave a legacy for his children. Ultimately, he hopes it will provide a broader perspective on American history.
