The Village (2004)
The Village (2004), an American period thriller film written, produced, and directed by M. Night Shyamalan, is set in 19th-century Pennsylvania. The small, isolated village is plagued by mysterious humanoid-creatures that inhabit the nearby woods. To protect themselves, watchtowers and tall poles with oil lamps are positioned around the perimeter of the village. Additionally, the elders have forbidden the color red as it seems to attract the creatures. When a young villager dies, Lucius Hunt asks for permission to venture through the woods to retrieve medicine from ‘the towns’, but his request is denied. His widowed mother, Alice, questions his desire to visit these towns that the elders have deemed wicked. As it turns out, each elder keeps a locked black box with unknown contents and they seem to have secrets. However, it is revealed that as long as the villagers avoid the woods, they can keep this threat at bay.
In secret, Lucius ventures into the woods and later lies to the elders, claiming it was a safe trip. However, shortly after his excursion, several skinned animal carcasses mysteriously appear in the village. Eventually, strange creatures invade the village, leaving red paint marks on people’s doors as a warning. Kitty, the daughter of Elder Edward Walker, develops feelings for Lucius, but he is actually in love with her blind younger sister Ivy. Eventually, Kitty marries someone else, allowing Ivy and Lucius to become engaged. However, before they can marry, Noah Percy (a young man with an apparent developmental disability) stabs Lucius out of jealousy. As the other elders consider Noah’s fate and keep him locked up in a small building, Edward goes against their wishes by sending Ivy (accompanied by two young males) through the forest to retrieve medicine for the dying Lucius.
