The Virgin Suicides (1999)
Sofia Coppola’s film, The Virgin Suicides (1999), follows a group of men in Grosse Pointe, Michigan as they reflect on their memories of the enigmatic Lisbon sisters. These five teenage girls are a point of fascination and longing for the neighborhood boys, who remember them from their youth. The Lisbon sisters, Therese, Mary, Bonnie, Lux, and Cecilia, were unattainable due to their strict Catholic parents and were often the subject of the boys’ conversations and dreams. After Cecilia’s suicide attempt, her therapist suggests that she could benefit from more social interaction with boys her age. However, Mrs. Lisbon remains adamant in denying her daughters a normal social life.
Mr. Lisbon convinces her to host a supervised party to lift Cecilia’s spirits. However, after Joe, a teenager with Down syndrome, is teased by other boys, Cecilia excuses herself and jumps from her second-story window. As a result, the Lisbon parents become even more vigilant in watching over their remaining daughters. This only adds to the family’s seclusion and intensifies the intrigue surrounding the girls, particularly in the eyes of the neighborhood boys. When school starts again, rebellious Lux begins a secret but brief romance with popular jock Trip Fontaine. In an attempt to get closer to Lux, Trip visits the Lisbon house and joins the family for television viewing.
