The Visit (2015)
The Visit (2015), an American found footage horror film by M. Night Shyamalan, follows the story of two Philadelphia siblings, Becca and Tyler. Their divorced mother, Loretta, is heading off on a cruise with her boyfriend for five days. It’s revealed that she hasn’t spoken to her parents in 15 years because of her disapproved marriage to her high-school teacher. The teens have never met their grandparents before and plan to record a documentary about their visit using a camcorder. Upon arrival at the train station, they meet ‘Nana’ and ‘Pop Pop’, and are instructed not to go into the basement due to mold. They are also told that bedtime is strictly at 9:30pm each night and they should not leave their room after that time. Although the grandparents initially appear amiable, their actions gradually take a strange turn.
On the first night, Becca breaks curfew and heads downstairs for a snack, where she catches Nana in the act of projectile vomiting. In the daytime, Nana playfully chases after the teens during their game of hide-and-seek. Then, Tyler discovers a pile of soiled diapers in the shed. During a trip to town, Pop Pop attacks an innocent man whom he believes is following them. When questioned about each other’s behavior, both grandparents brush it off as if nothing is out of the ordinary. As their erratic conduct escalates, Becca and Tyler’s documentary-style film transforms into one focused on solving mysteries and gathering evidence. A woman who received counseling from Nana and Pop Pop shows her gratitude by bringing over a blueberry cobbler, but after a confrontation occurs, she mysteriously disappears without being seen leaving.
