The Visitor (2007)
The American drama film, The Visitor (2007), was written and directed by Tom McCarthy and produced by Michael London and Mary Jane Skalski. Walter Vale, a widowed economics professor from Connecticut College, leads a mostly solitary life. He occupies his time by occasionally taking piano lessons in honor of his late wife, a renowned concert pianist, and rarely works on his latest book. Despite not being entirely enthusiastic about it, he is asked to present a paper at an academic conference at New York University as the co-author. Charles, his department head, insists that he attend. However, upon arriving at his old apartment in Manhattan, Walter is taken aback to find an unmarried couple living there who have rented it from a con artist who claimed to own the place.
Tarek, an immigrant from Syria and a talented djembe player with Palestinian-Syrian roots, crosses paths with Zainab, a Senegalese jewelry designer. However, their uncertain immigration status is revealed when they are forced to suddenly leave their current living situation. Despite having no place to go, Walter shows kindness and allows them to stay with him. As they spend more time together, a friendship begins to blossom between Tarek and Walter. Tarek shares his love for music by teaching Walter how to play the drum, and they even join in on a regular drum circle in Central Park. On their way home one day, Tarek is mistakenly charged for not paying his subway fare and is taken into custody at a detention center in Queens for being an undocumented immigrant.
