The Vow (2012)
The Vow (2012), an American romantic drama film directed by Michael Sucsy and written by Abby Kohn, follows the story of Paige Collins and her husband Leo as they come out of a movie theater on a snowy evening. Despite the chilly weather, the couple is lost in their own world of love and affection. As they make their way home, Paige leans over to kiss Leo while they are stopped at a sign. However, their romantic moment is abruptly interrupted when a salt truck crashes into their car from behind. The impact of the accident sends Paige flying through the windshield. Both are taken to the emergency room and as Leo narrates how ‘moments of impact help us discover ourselves’, we are taken back to how Paige and Leo first crossed paths.
Through flashbacks, we see how their love story began – from the courtship to becoming engaged and eventually getting married at the Art Institute of Chicago where they share a kiss under the iconic Cloud Gate. Paige is placed in an induced coma and upon awakening, she has no recollection of the recent years. Her parents, Bill and Rita Thornton, are informed and pay her a visit, where they meet Leo for the first time. Paige is confused as to why he has not met her parents despite being married to her, and even more puzzled by his lack of knowledge on the matter. Additionally, she cannot comprehend why she dropped out of law school, ended her engagement with ex-fiancé Jeremy, and has had no contact with loved ones.
