The War (1994)
The War (1994) is an American drama film directed by Jon Avnet. Stephen Simmons, a shell-shocked Vietnam veteran, returns home after voluntarily seeking treatment for his war-related nightmares. Due to his hospitalization, he lost three consecutive jobs. In need of income, Stephen accepts a new job as a custodial engineer at a grammar school. However, he is forced to leave this job within one week due to a law prohibiting individuals with mental health history from working near children. Despite the challenges, the Simmons family’s financial situation drives Stephen to continue searching for employment. He eventually lands a job picking potatoes and strikes up a friendship with Moe Henry. With Moe’s assistance, Stephen secures a position at a mine – his most successful job yet.
In the meantime, Lidia and Stu, Stephen’s twin children, sought to escape the mundane reality of their lives. They stumbled upon a tree in the nearby forest and came up with the idea of building a tree house there. Initially, there were disagreements among the group of friends about who would be responsible for constructing it and who would have access to it. The boys – Stu, Chet, and Marsh – wanted exclusive rights to it while the girls – Lidia, Elvadine and Amber – insisted on working together and sharing it afterwards. After multiple negotiations, they finally reached an agreement to build it cooperatively. To gather materials, the girls resorted to scavenging from a garbage dump occupied by the Lipnickis, notorious for their bullying behavior towards the Simmons and their friends.
